Weekend Handicap Sleeper Notes: 28th & 29th March

The ‘start’ of the Flat season is always a bit of a false dawn… even though last weekend (Lincoln weekend at Doncaster) was officially the start of the flat game, the reality is that it takes a few weeks to properly engage first gear…

No bad thing of course as the jumps is deep in the throws of ‘National season’… and we are just about to go on a fast and furious run of Irish, Aintree and Scottish versions of ‘Nationals’…

Indeed I’m deep in Aintree Grand National meeting analysis right now… with a small break to cover the Irish National on Monday (6th April)… (get all that analysis HERE)…

BUUUUUTTTTT… despite my main focus still being over the jumps I really wanted to pull together some ‘Weekend Handicap Sleeper Notes‘ for the free NTF blog… just to start getting my brain somewhere near the place it will need to be focusing on in a few weeks time… when I crack back into a full run of the NTF Summer Service (which, naturally, mainly covers the flat action)…

And that is exactly what I’ve done… with the first set of ‘Weekend Handicap Sleeper Notes’ for the 2026 Flat season now available below… the two day Lincoln meeting from Doncaster that took place last weekend being the focus for this first set of notes…

During the summer months I post a selection of my ‘Handicap Sleeper Notes’ from the weekend of racing that has just slid into the form book… and this year I’ll also be including a healthy slice of ‘Badly Drawn Horses‘ (BDH) for readers to follow…

The notes I’ll be posting here on a weekly basis (once the flat game gets properly up to speed in a few weeks time) make up a large percentage of my own private notes for the flat game. They also serve as the foundation for identifying ‘Prime Condition’, ‘Handicap Sleeper‘ and ‘Badly Drawn Horses’ for the NTF Stats Sheets I provide full NTF members with…

I produce Stats Sheets for NTF Members roughly 3 or 4 times a week throughout the duration of the Summer service… and the horses covered in these posts will be highlighted to full members so that they don’t miss any of them when they hit the track and have their Prime Conditions to shoot for

Let’s crack on with the first Handicap Sleeper notes of 2026…

Weekend Handicap Sleeper Notes: 28th & 29th March

📆 Saturday 28th March

2:25 Doncaster – 1m Class 2 Handicap (Spring Mile)

Race Note: This race favoured the bottom half of the draw, with the first 4 home all drawn 9 or lower and 5 of the first 6 home drawn 9 or lower… indeed 4 of the first 6 home were drawn in stall 5 or lower, so an argument to be made that the race favoured the bottom quarter of the draw… as such it’s worth looking for some Badly Drawn Horses (BDH) that ran well from the higher stalls…

🏇 5th – ON THE RIVER

Was drawn in stall 11 and was the first home of those drawn in a double figure stall… he was also short of room around 1f out and under the circumstances this was a decent effort, and worth marking up a little on the bare finishing position… the 7yo starts this season on a winnable handicap mark, running here off OR 78 which is 2lbs below his last and highest winning mark of OR 78, and he’s worth keeping on the radar off the back of this effort… I have his PC as… (Since with H Bethell) Hcps | G/S or softer | OR 81 or less = 9/16, 1p – all 9 wins since with H Bethell… 9 of his 11 career wins (2 wins with previous yard) have come in April to July and he can hopefully land career victory number 12 in the coming months…

💤

🏇 7th – CLASSIC ENCOUNTER

Broke from stall 14 here and was up against it from the off given the bias towards the lower numbers… he ran here off OR 85, 2lbs above his last and highest winning mark, but that looks a mark that he can still at least be competitive off and he’s worth looking out for under his PC of… turf | 1m-1m1f | DSLR >25 = 731212 (2/6, 3p – both career wins)… a drop back to a Class 3 or lower may be preferable as he’s now 0/3, 0p in Class 2 races, for all I wouldn’t discount him at this level if he has his PC to shoot for, he did run well in a Class 2 at Sandown last season from a slightly higher mark and it isn’t out of the question that he has a Class 2 win in his locker (although the lower levels certainly look more suitable for the 5yo)…

💤

3:32 Doncaster – 1m Class 2 Handicap (Lincoln)

Race Note: This race also favoured the lower numbers, with 4 of the first 5 home all drawn in stall 5 or lower and 6 of the first 8 home drawn in stalls 9 or lower… and like the Spring Mile it’s well worth looking for some Badly Drawn Horses (BDH) that ran well from the higher stalls…

🏇 3rd – TRIBAL CHIEF

Drawn in stall 21 and it’s not hard to mark this one out as a BDH to keep on the radar going forward from this, with the 2 that finished ahead of him drawn in stalls 2 & 5 and the 2 that finished behind him drawn in stalls 3 & 4… the fact he was able to split those 4 that broke from the favoured bottom quarter of the draw suggests he’s run a massive race here… I have his absolute Prime Conditions as… 1m+ Handicaps worth 30k or less | DSLR 21-60 = 1211131 (5/7, 2p – all 5 career wins)… although I’m open on where the actual ceiling to his class level may be as he’s run well enough in valuable races (including this one) to hint that he could be better than the ‘races worth 30k or less’ ceiling I’ve put on his abilities…

🏇 9th – SHOUT

Broke from stall 19 and he just could never get himself involved from his tricky starting position… he was dropped 1lb to OR 100 for this effort, which is a pleasing bonus given his high draw was most likely the cause of his finishing position, and that looks mark that the lightly raced 4yo should be able to defy… he also tends to improve for his seasonal debut run – now 0/3, 1p on seasonal debut – so he should be sharper for this outing, and there’s plenty of reason to believe that he’s still got a decent big field straight track handicap in his locker at some point this season… his form on straight tracks and NOT on seasonal debut reads… 4103131 (3/7, 3p – all 3 career wins)… and although that’s not necessarily his Prime Conditions, they are conditions where he looks strong under…

📆 Sunday 29th March

5:15 Doncaster – 6f Class 3 Handicap

Race Note: Low numbers were again the call in this straight track Doncaster contest, with the first three home breaking from stalls 4, 1 & 3 and 5 of the first 6 home breaking from stall 7 or lower… and once again it makes sense to look for a BDH to follow from something draw in the higher stalls…

🏇 4th – WOVEN

Broke from stall 11 here and was the only horse in the first 6 places to break from a double figure stall… he’s a 10yo now but seems to be holding his form perfectly well… starting this campaign with this solid effort (from a poor draw), which came off the back of ending last season with efforts such as a neck second in the Ayr Bronze Cup in September, a win at Ayr in October and a solid 5th of 18 at Newbury, also in October… he’s not a horse that wins regularly – career form of 4 wins from 58 (4/50 on turf) – but he regularly runs himself into the place at big odds (he has 19 places on his CV to add to his 4 wins) and he’s worth looking out for under his PC of… OR 88 or less | Galloping turf tracks | C3 or less (worth <11k) = 4/17, 9p – all 4 career wins...
